Do I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Yes. TV series from the Game of Thrones world have always boasted attractive visuals, but they've never been mastered in native 4k. House of the Dragon holds the first spot in this discipline, raising the bar for future series and spin-offs. The series was shot through the lens of Arri Alexa 65 digital cameras, which are large format cameras that simulate 65mm film stock in chip size. Their amazing image parameters are perfect for native Ultra HD. Moreover, the transfer benefits not only from their great sense for detail - normally these cameras record rough footage at 6k, which was very likely the case here; but also from the great dynamic range that allows the strengths of HDR to shine through, not only in the brightness peaks, but as is common with this series, in the shadows as well. In addition to the native 4k master, House of the Dragon has also been natively graded for Dolby Vision, so HDR is performing at its best here.
Even HotD didn't avoid controversy: some episodes were so dark that viewers complained about the low brightness. But that's a decision by the creators that must be respected and is meant to reflect the atmosphere of the story. The important thing is that such dark sequences can be best reproduced by UHDBD, which offers extremely high quality compression alongside standard and premium HDR, which was not the case at the time of the SVoD premiere. The same can then be said of the Dolby Atmos track. So, as always, we stress that nowhere has the series looked or looks better than on this disc. Reference material.
