Do I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Yes – and it’s safe to say that the new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray gets the absolute maximum out of the source materials. Warner Bros. re-scanned the original Super 35 analog film, on which Fincher shot Se7en, in 8K for the anniversary. The film was then completely restored at this same, even by today’s standards, monumental resolution. It didn’t go through just the standard restoration processes. Under Fincher’s supervision, a year and a half was spent on color corrections, cleaning materials, and tweaking visual effects – all in 8K – to create a new 8K master that more closely aligns with Fincher’s vision.
The organic movement of the film material was stabilized, as were some camera movements that Fincher decided to refine. He also addressed minor inconsistencies between Kodak and Deluxe film stocks, which the cinematographer had routinely mixed during production. Furthermore, in certain interior scenes, background elements visible through windows were redone, as their matte paintings and brightness inconsistencies had worked for film but needed to be "clean" for digital.
As a bonus, Fincher even removed a stray hair from Gwyneth Paltrow’s face in one intimate scene – a meticulous detail very much in line with his style. The retouching and remastering have resulted in a new digital version of this thriller classic that adheres more closely to the director’s current standards and demands for technical precision.
Since there’s no 8K distribution chain, the final version was downsampled to 4K. Both the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and the new digital distribution copies for IMAX theaters will take full advantage of these upgraded materials. The film has never looked better – and likely never will again.
