Do I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Alita was created by combining live footage, virtual worlds and motion capturing, which means that the final image is a combination of live actors in real and virtual backdrops, around which digitally created characters move, modelled on the performances of the actors on the set. Although this is a technically complicated method, it is becoming more common in fantasy and sci-fi projects.
In the case of Rodriguez's sci-fi, the recording took place on an Arri Alexa Mini and on Cameron's Pace/Cameron Fusion Camera System 3D set-up. Regardless of their resolution, in any case, the complete post-production was done in 2k, as any other resolution would have been several times more challenging and expensive with minimal benefit to the final product. For the purpose of Ultra HD presentation, the resulting master is therefore upsampled. For a predominantly animated title, however, resolution is not as crucial as the benefit that other technologies have for it, namely the expansion of colour and luminance space through WCG and HDR.
That the use of these technologies is important to the filmmakers is indicated by the fact that Alita is the first ever film on domestic 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray to carry both a premium Dolby Vision and a similar HDR10+ layer alongside the basic HDR-10 layer (it is also the first 20th Century Fox studio title to feature Dolby Vision). This combination promises to make the most of the UHDBD source material, making this home theater copy the definitive version of Alita, and it doesn't get any better looking audiovisually.
