Do I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Information about the resolution of the final master of Bohemian Rhapsody is not available, so we have to reflect on the knowledge of previous productions of the filmmakers involved in the film. Bryan Singer is known to love experimenting with new technologies, and cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel shares this enthusiasm. Their collaboration on latest X-Men led to a 4k master, with HDR grading already in place for cinemas. So it's safe to assume that the same approach was taken by both filmmakers on Singer's dream project - although Dexter Fletcher took over from the famous filmmaker during filming due to Singer's behavioural issues.

Bohemian Rhapsody was primarily shot on the Arri Alexa SXT at 3.4k resolution (simulating the chip size of Super 35), while Sigel gradually switched to the Arri Alexa 65 (simulating the chip size of 65mm film), whose resolution already climbs to a spectacular 6.5k. This was used for the Live Aid concert and later in Mercury's life. Given Sigel's previous work and the fact that the film was edited by John Ottman, also a longtime collaborator of Singer's (and a composer!), we assume that the rough footage was edited and then post-produced in 4k, which would make the Ultra HD Blu-ray transfer a native presentation.

However, even if not, such transfers always benefit primarily from the quality of compression and the presence of HDR. The film was already graded for the extended brightness range before the theatrical release, so we can expect UHDBD to make full use of this video technology - the disc features the film with premium HDR10+ alongside classic HDR-10, and it is only the second UHD release with such technical equipment in the Czech Republic.
