Do I get native 4k Ultra HD?
Yes. Considering the age of the film, it is not surprising that Fright Night was made entirely in analogue, i.e. by exposing classic 35mm film. The latter has a theoretical resolution of between 4k and 6k, and so when scanned for the purposes of a new digital print, it can provide the image information and sharpness equivalent to digital recording at just such a resolution. So it is not surprising that when the studio did exactly that, by reaching for the original negatives, restoring them, and then scanning them at 4k for the purposes of the new digital presentation, they got an image whose parameters match those of a state-of-the-art video presentation with reference spectacle potential. In other words, technically, the film doesn't seem to have aged a day, and in its Ultra HD form it offers a spectacle to match the hottest new releases. And not just in terms of sharpness or detail, but also in terms of colour and brightness range, which thanks to HDR pushes the quality even beyond the capabilities of cinema projection. So Fright Night now looks better in the home cinema than it did in its theatrical release.
