Do I get native 4k Ultra HD?

Yes. Taxi Driver was made at a time when digital cinematography did not exist, so it was shot on classic 35mm analog film. This format has the advantage of a theoretical resolution of around 6K (depending on various factors) and excellent archival properties.

For the stunning Columbia Classics collection—on which the foundation of this UHD Blu-ray master is based—the studio was able to retrieve the original negatives from the vaults, clean and fully restore them, and then scan them in 4K for a brand-new master. This process seamlessly combines the benefits of both old and new technologies, resulting in a truly spectacular viewing experience:

Native 4K extraction maximizes the image data from the film stock, both in terms of fine detail and dynamic range. The Ultra HD transfer then presents this information in the highest possible quality: HEVC compression ensures clean visuals free of compression artifacts while preserving the film’s organic grain structure. The Ultra HD resolution allows for the retention of maximum image detail, while HDR and Wide Color Gamut (WCG) enhance brightness and tonal range, presenting the film in a way that surpasses its original theatrical screenings and even outshines many modern productions shot on digital cameras. Additionally, in this new edition, Sony has enhanced the disc with a Dolby Vision layer for an even more refined visual experience.
